Black Friday Shopping

Here is a pic of the boys on Thanksgiving!  Exciting, huh.  Don't try to have a conversation with them while watching a movie.

This year I decided to join the crazies and do a little Black Friday shopping.  I arrived at the mall at about 11:55 pm and waited in my car until close to midnight.   There was a massive line to get in, so I thought I would let them stand in the cold and join them after they were all inside.  It was a bit on the crazy side!!!  However, I was surprised to find about 95% of the crowd consisted of high schoolers that were, let’s just say…in my way!!!  The good side of that, if you stayed clear of Abercrombie and Fitch, it wasn’t all bad.  I didn’t even have to wait in line at a few of the stores.  I was hoping to score a $40 crockpot for $6 at Younkers, but that store was a zoo with a massive line, so I passed on that one and headed to Target.

I almost left the minute I walked in because the line curled throughout almost every aisle of the grocery section.  I found a toy I was looking for and several games to donate to the Smile Mission on sale for $4.

Since I was a late arriver, the only carts that were available were freakin monster sized kid carts.  I have to use these things enough – I didn’t really want to in a mad mix of people.  Have you ever pushed one of those, I hit about every shelf.

So I ended up buying a bunch of stuff at Target, clearly not my best judge at 2:00 am, the next day I had to return a few things that I purchased the wrong type of.  I finally made it back home by about 2:30 to get a few hours of sleep to arrive at the office at 8:00.  I do think I might participate in this madness again someday, but will be sure to have the next day off!

Smile Mission Complete!

While we were off work for a week, we made the toy delivery to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines.  Even though I lost sight of this project for a month or two, we ended up with lots of great toys for the kids.  A big thanks to my brother - he decided to go about Christmas shopping different this year, so instead of getting presents, everyone selected a charity to donate to.  We opted to put our gifts towards toys for the kids.  Thanks to Angie and Kellie for donating too!!!  Keith and I both agreed it would have been really fun to actually give the gifts straight to the kids and see them play with them, but they keep them aside until they need them.

THANK YOU AGAIN to all who contributed!!!

Our Smile Mission is off to a GREAT START!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who has connected with me and donated things for Blank Children's hospital!  Below, I starred the items we have received, but don't feel like you still can't donate those items. I'm just trying to get one of each.  I also received some cash donations, so I will save that up until we get closer to December and buy a few of the big ticket items.  My goal is to do a weekly update so you can see our progress!
Thank you again, your generosity is amazing.  Just think, your small contribution will completely make somebody elses day!
----original post-----
A couple years ago I did a few "cans for comments" posts and donated formula to a local food bank. I was recently reading a volunteer page at Blank Children's Hospital and came across this Child Life list and realized I didn't get around to it this winter with the move. So I was hoping with an early start, before every ones budgets get extra tight with holiday shopping, some of you would be up for help me put some smiles on some little ones faces! Here is the list of items the hospital looks for people to donate, many are small- even things we get for free at times in the mail.

So my goal is every week to buy at least one of these items and hoping some of you will help out by buying some of these items and sending them to me. Week by week I will do an update and check off the items we have collected and then hopefully by December we will have a complete list. (Maybe excluding a couple of the really big items or gift cards)

When Dylan was 4 months old he spent a few days at Blank with a case of phenomena, it is a great children's hospital with all kinds of fun things specialized for children to make their stay a bit more pleasant. Every time I walked in and out of the hospital, I was so thankful that we were only there for a short stay!

I would appreciate any contributions to collecting these items - some things are as little as a bottle of bubbles - I'm sure there are some parents out there that have a couple they would love to get rid of! Or glitter or play doh! One thing- they do ask that all the items are new due to infection control.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!
