I like 4 1/2

SHE LOVES playing with big kids!

I remember when my boys were tiny little babies and strangers who had twins would approach me at times and I remember on a number of occasions people telling me 4 – you got to make it to 4, that’s when they start to get easier.  At the time, that seemed very far away and here we are!  In my short years of parenting, I’ve quickly learned things never get easier, they just get different.  And though many days I feel exhausted or overwhelmed, I’m always happy they are still at the age where we are all under the same roof and they don’t have driver’s license (so not ready for that!).
Anyway – back to 4. I can’t say the start of 4 was anything easy, actually I think we were by far tested the most we had been tested as parents on an entire new level that I did not even think existed.  For us going from two to three was challenging and the boys didn’t do so great with all the changes.  We still have our really hard days, but lately it seems like more good ones than bad ones.  Lucky for us Olivia was a really good baby! Regardless, I still feel like we are a bit of a train wreck anywhere we go these days.
The past few weeks I’ve noticed how much more independent they have gotten (sometimes too independent).  For the most part, we are through the “running off” stage – provided I can keep them in our yard.  They seem to think all the neighbors yards are fair game.  But they are at the age where they don’t get as sick as often, so not as many doctors’ visits.  And generally they can tell me they have something or another, a vitamin seems to do the trick.  They can tell me what’s wrong or what they need.  They are fun because it’s still totally OK for them to give me a big hug and kiss when I drop them off at daycare.  Of course all these things they can tell us are great – but they also like to repeat things back to you.  I just heard Dylan tell Keith he didn’t like his attitude.  So you must be careful with your words at this age.  I love their perspective right now and all the things they like to tell me and their thought process.  You can teach them so much at this age, which is neat to see.  They can be a bit silly in the way they try to make conversation at times.  Last night our neighbor was walking by with his bike helmet on and Carter wanted his attention a bit, so he told him not to forget his helmet at his friend’s house.  Totally random!  I love their little conversations between each other.  Even though they fight sometimes, I hope they always remain as close as they are.  They really are inseparable, they will sit on our huge couch side-by-side, often times overlapped.  Sometimes too close as I’ve seen them pee together at the potty on a number of occasions.  They have this new language we didn’t have as kids.  One day we were watching TV and they said something about the show was downloading.  I’ll hear a dot com here and there. Yet they don't totally get it.  I told them I was going to order something from the Internet and Dylan asked me if it was going to pop out of the computer. For the most part they are easier to dress (still pretty darn picky), but I remember days where it was such a process to convince them to get dressed – getting shoes on, that’s still a battle!  They are still picky eaters, Dylan has been getting better about trying things.  Bedtime can still have its challenges, but nothing like we once went through nightly.  So a lot of fun right now and I’m holding on tight because I am so not ready for them to be big school kids yet!  They start the last room at daycare next month – the one before kindergarten!

Birthday Cake

I thought the boys' cake tasted great!!! I've had a piece every night since.  Good thing it is almost gone.  The boys wouldn't eat their cake, finally got Dylan to eat a little tonight.  He did eat some of the polka dots.

Trick or Treat

This was our third Halloween with the boys, but was definitely the most fun!  The weather was great for October and we got to Trick or Treat with the boys' cousins, Cade and Oliver.  We didn't go out too long, but the boys followed Cade around and had so much  fun going up to the houses and getting candy.  It was fun listening to them repeating "bye, bye, thank you, trick or treat, thank you boys."  So fun to watch them run around in their little giraffe costumes.  My favorite part was the butts, they had a bunch of padding in them, so it was really funny to watch them walk and see their tails wag a little.

I love how Oliver is just in awe at Carter and Dylan.  He might want to be a giraffe next year!

22 months!

They are growing up fast!  Almost two!  And if you can't tell, they have only had two hair cuts.  At this rate, I'm thinking they could dress up as the Bieber twins for Halloween this year.
So what's happening with Carter and Dylan at 22 months?  I must say, outside of some challenging moments, I am still loving this stage.

  • Sleeping in our beds has been going MUCH better!  Naps can still be a challenge, but we aren't having near as many issues.

  • They do seem to wake up about three times a night, which I think is crazy since they are about two.  They go back to sleep easily, but that's a lot of lost sleep for mom and mostly dad!

  • Chatter boxes!  This weekend Dylan was on a "mommy" kick, I think he is thinking this word means a lot more than just me. "mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy" translates to "mommy, pick me up, hold me, I want milk, now, now, I want....."  - Keith said he was getting a little tired of hearing "mommy"

  • Carter is really into bringing me my belongings, he will bring me my phone, hair band, camera, Keith's pedometer and he will be so proud when he gives us these items. Now if Dylan gets a hold of these things he takes off and runs!

  • They just can't get enough of going up and down stairs! Especially Carter!  He will stand at the top of our stairs and scream and try to break our gate.

  • Dylan is still really into wanting us to change his diaper ALL THE TIME!  This morning he had four diapers by 9:00, Carter - one.  I feel like I have a newborn again at this rate.

  • At any given moment one will suddenly be pantless or shirtless

  • We are still using the potty some, the glam of it all has gone away and now they will sit on it a lot, but not let go.  They do enjoy the toilet paper!

  • It's getting tough to keep things out of reach, they can even reach things on the counters now

  • Carter just LOVES planes and trains

  • A lot of nights Keith and the boys will be eating when I get home from work and the moment the door opens, Dylan always says "Hi Mommy", I love it!

  • Dylan is a GREAT helper!  Every time we get the vacuum out, he gets his broom out and cleans up too.  At night I try to get them to help clean up toys and Dylan always works really hard and puts things away.  Carter helps some too, but loses interest fast.  I guess in this arena, Dylan is a little more like Keith and Carter is a little more like me:)

  • Carter is still obsessed with doors and shoes

  • I'm working with them on being "nice" boys- they both push, pull hair and bite.  I would say the pushing is the worst.

  • We have to watch what we say because they just repeat everything!  Poor guys got tons of bug bites, but now they keep saying "bug bite"..."bug bite"

  • wipes are probably one of the most popular toys right now

  • Lately they have been into saying things are "broken"

  • They have been really enjoying putting together puzzles and drawing with sidewalk chalk

  • They are into this more milk phase which is driving us crazy.  They have like two drinks of milk and think they need refills.  This happens about eight times a day

  • Shopping trips have been challenging, Carter refuses to stay seated in the cart no matter how tight the belt is

  •  Eating is still a challenge, they are really liking pasta right now, some meat and fruit

  • Carter has gotten even closer to his blanket, I'm lucky if I can make it out of daycare without it

  • They are really into Elmo

  • Every time they get into Keith's truck, they still both say "oh no" and point looking for their movie

  • Dylan's still Momma's boy and Carter is a dadda's boy, although Carter has been snuggling up to me a little more lately

  • They really like to say "no", I'm starting to think they think it is "yes"

  • They have NO FEAR!  They will climb anything or jump off of about anything

Muscle Men

Here is our latest battle!  The boys think it is really fun to swing on the bar above the slide.  So far it doesn't seem too dangerous, but we are not encouraging in the event that they would fly right off the bar and Carter did attempt this over the rock wall, so that was a little scary.  Dylan doesn't do it too often, but Carter LOVES it!

Guess who are about to be TWO!!!

I keep thinking how my babies are going to be two in just two short months!!!  Where has the time gone?  I need to start thinking of some fun birthday party ideas and presents for these two.  (The doll house is still on the list:))  Any ideas??? I find picking out kid's toys to be hard!  To be honest, at our household, it is tough to beat a stack of solo cups!  It doesn't matter how cool the toy is, the cups are probably more fun!  So that's our benchmark!

The good and the bad of entertaining twin toddler boys!

Even though I miss the boys a lot during the day, I am OK with them going to daycare, otherwise they would be trapped within our house all day long!  The bad thing about two wild boys is I really can't take them many places on my own unless they are trapped by shopping cart or stroller and their patience for that is short.  So I doubt we would be able to get out and do all the fun mom things like library story hours, play dates at the park or playtime at the pool.  They do listen to Keith better than me, but he wouldn't trust them at a park or pool by himself either. Even if they are being good and not trying to runaway, they may each be trying to go up different ladders at the same time.  I think things like parks will get more manageable by next summer when we don't have to always be behind them making sure they don't miss a step.  I do sometimes wonder if I had been home with them since they were born if they would listen better than they do now.  Of course I realize I need to be more strict with them as well.  There is a set of girl twin their age at daycare and they just follow their dad in and out, no fuss and he doesn't have to hold their hands.  I guess these two just seem to be extra curious.
The good!   A lot of moms told me you will love it when they get older because they will play together.  This I am really finding to be true.  They are always playing together and entertaining each other and it is a lot of fun to watch. I just told Keith last week that if we had only had one we would probably need twice as many toys because I bet they spend about half the night chasing each other around the house.  Or if one thinks something looks fun or gets a big idea, the other is always right behind.
I'm lucky Keith is around quite a bit and pretty good about wanting to take them to parks and places on the weekends so we can take them together.

17 months

{Carter above, Dylan below}

{Dylan left, Carter right}

{Every time I tell Dylan to smile for the camera, this is the face I get. I love it though!}

17 Months! Where does the time go, I was just looking back at some old posts and completely forgot we blocked off our living room with the ottoman for a few months. I think I would need to put up a brick wall to block these two from anything these days. So here is a little bit about these two at 17 months:
  • Both love listening to stories and love if we sing to them, too bad I can't sing a tune for the life of me
  • I think we are starting to enter the world of tantrums, both can be on the dramatic side
  • They LOVE to climb and run around
  • They are getting so tall and can open all the doors with lever handles and they can pretty much see what is on the counter, so you can't hide much from them anymore
  • They are still completely fascinated by Stella's dog food, yesterday Dylan dumped the entire bowl of water on the floor, but then he got a dish towel out of the drawer. So I guess he is learning something!
  • They are so aware of what we do and they will copy what we do quite a bit, like if you point at Dylan because he is doing something naughty, he will point back at you and shake his finger or in the morning I will use my makeup brush, then sometimes they will put on their "blush."
  • Carter does NOT like socks!
  • They sure enjoy American Idol.
  • They like to force feed me food, and I mean force feed. I gave each of them a peep and the next thing I knew, they were trying to cram both of them in my mouth. And I don't like peeps!
  • They still don't say a lot of words but are really jabbering a ton and starting to say parts of lots of words. Carter seems to be saying more words, he is good with the "b" words like ball, bubble, boo, and for some reason he is always saying buuuuhhhhh BUH and I have no idea what he means by it
  • I love when they make the tiger sound
  • They are obsessed with our alarm clock and turn the radio on every time they go into our room
  • Some of their favorite things to play with are: kitchen, anywhere outside, blocks, blankets, books, push-cars, tent tunnels, sit and spin (really just the music part) & tormenting Stella
  • They love playing peek-a-boo with their blankets and behind the curtains. They have the most fun with our kitchen curtains, Carter plays in them almost every night.
  • They are almost always in the best of moods about an hour before bedtime and then you never want to put them in bed.
  • Eating is still a battle, but they have been doing better this week. It is funny because with their highchairs we didn't really designate a chair to each, but with their booster seats, they go right to the same chair every meal.
  • Dylan used to always sit on top of Carter and take his pacifier, but lately Carter has been sitting on top of Dylan and snatching his pacifier. Even though Dylan totally deserves it, we usually pull Carter off pretty quick because he is a pretty heavy little dude.
  • They give some really good bear hugs!
